Tea bowls, or Chawan as they are called when they are used in Japanese tea ceremonies, are typically varied is size and style. Often held in two hands and used for sipping tea (most commonly matcha) they are my go-to for my morning ritual of a matcha latte made with a mix of a turmeric/ginger juice I press from the fresh root.

I am taking great liberty in calling these pieces “tea bowls” as I cannot claim to have the years of experience really required to make a traditional tea bowl. Japanese tea bowls have a rich history that emphasizes aesthetics, craftmanship and the philosophy of simplicity and mindfulness. I aspire to all of these in my ceramics!

The Japanese call these little sippers Guinomi – distinct from Yunomi because they are smaller. Often made for sipping sake. I think of them as a way to take small sips of a special drink. Sake is delicious, but maybe you have a special whiskey or scotch you want to taste. Take a sip, savor the aroma and taste. You won’t be gulping your drink with these!
