Plates are simple to make, yet not always easy to fire. Different clays create so many different effects, and there are lots of variables that affect the final piece. They can sit individually on the kiln shelf, or can be stacked (as long as they aren’t glazed on the surface). You can place them in the kiln upside down on their “wads” — the material used to separate all wood fired pieces from the kiln shelf — so the fire licks over and around them. Where they are placed in the kiln makes a difference too.
The textured plates are best used as presentation for finger food and cheese.

The Japanese call these little sippers Guinomi – distinct from Yunomi because they are smaller. Often made for sipping sake. I think of them as a way to take small sips of a special drink. Sake is delicious, but maybe you have a special whiskey or scotch you want to taste. Take a sip, savor the aroma and taste. You won’t be gulping your drink with these!
