Bowls are one of those forms that are so various and inviting that they are always an enticement when I sit at the wheel or look at a ball of clay on my work table. They are one of those vessels that are the perfect combination of function and freedom.
From tight, upright forms to wide, generous curves, from sharply faceted walls to soft, swelling profiles, small changes in angle or proportion can completely shift a bowl’s character.
The Japanese call these little sippers Guinomi – distinct from Yunomi because they are smaller. Often made for sipping sake. I think of them as a way to take small sips of a special drink. Sake is delicious, but maybe you have a special whiskey or scotch you want to taste. Take a sip, savor the aroma and taste. You won’t be gulping your drink with these!
